BIOGRAPHY Claude A. “Sandy” Thomas Independent Consultant
Sandy Thomas has three decades of experience in high technology, with a focus on business solutions for the financial, healthcare and manufacturing industries. Since 1997, his consulting services have included developing strategic business plans, creating growth and restructuring options, and facilitating a number of M&A transactions. He was the interim COO and is a current board member of a health care software ASP. For three years he was a director, member of the Executive Committee and Chairman of Strategy & Finance for a public web development firm focused on the financial industry. Background After service as an Army officer, he was Assistant to the President of the Wall Street Division of Electronic Data Systems (EDS), where he managed key account proposal & implementation teams for muli-million dollar acquisitions and outsourcing contracts. He held sales, sales management and marketing positions with a brokerage transaction processor acquired by ADP. Moving to consulting with the Chicago region of Coopers & Lybrand he started a new Investment Industry Practice, which helped financial services clients design and implement strategic information systems. Joining Digital Equipment Corporation in 1986, he was the first Global VP of the new Financial Industry Applications business unit. Solution offerings included global trading, insurance underwriting and banking. Revenues from the financial industry tripled in the first four years from $250 million to $750 million, creating a new strategic business unit and a world-wide integrated profit center. Moving to Atlanta with First Data Corp (FFMC) he was SVP corporate account sales management and also CEO of International Banking Technologies, where he grew this newly acquired business unit 35% first year. He also restructured the Retail Point of Sale (POS) hardware & software division as COO of a second division. Later, as Business Development EVP for CheckFree, he managed the $170 million acquisition of a banking technology firm. He sold a non-strategic unit for $20 million, restructured two other units to breakeven, and repositioned the new Software Solutions division for 22% revenue growth. Education & Publications Sandy holds a BE cum laude in Chemical Engineering from Vanderbilt University and an MBA in Marketing & Finance with honors from Washington University. He completed the International Executive program at INSEAD in France. He is a member of Society of International Business Fellows where he and the Class of 2001 spent two weeks in China meeting with political and business leaders. He is the author of numerous articles on the application of information technology to the financial services industry in journals such as American Banker, Banking, Industrial Marketing, and the Boston Globe.
